Hogwarts Legacy Developer Sets Expectations For Free Summer Game Update

Summary

  • The summer update for
    Hogwarts Legacy
will be smaller than expected, likely focusing on quality-of-life improvements.
  • Portkey Games wants to show appreciation to players with the upcoming update.
  • The community is left speculating on what the update will entail, with cautious optimism for improvements over new content.

Hogwarts Legacy is set to grow even bigger with its upcoming summer update, but developer Portkey Games wants to avoid disappointment by appropriately setting players’ expectations. Following the game’s launch in early 2023, the studio behind the Wizarding World game has been quiet on what fans can expect in terms of additional content and expansions. Given that the community has waited for close to a year for new experiences, Portkey Games made it clear that while it does have something exciting in the works, it may not be as big as expected.

Per Hogwarts Legacy‘s community manager Chandler Wood on X (formerly Twitter), Portkey Games wants users to know that when it originally announced post-launch support for its game, it very intentionally used “additional updates and features for the game to describe its intentions.

Wood continued on to say that the summer update is “a small way of us showing appreciation to the community for supporting the game since its release. While the phrasing may be slightly confusing, the overall message is that the long-awaited content update for Hogwarts Legacy will be smaller than some fans may have hoped.

Over on Hogwarts Legacy‘s Reddit, players were left puzzled by Wood’s announcement, questioning what the summer update could contain. The community is currently speculating that the patch could bring with it anything from a New Game+ mode, a reset of house points, changes to the morality system, or even, pessimistically, the addition of microtransactions. Overall, Wood’s statements regarding the scale of the summer update have left the community cautious about what they can expect with the majority now believing it will feature more quality-of-life improvement over actual new content.

Given the rampant financial success of the original Hogwarts Legacy, despite its mixed critical reviews, it seems like a safe bet that Warner Bros. would want to capitalize on the video game franchise further. Portkey Games have yet to announce anything relating to a sequel but Warner Bros. has stated that’s in the process of re-evaluating its approach to gaming, stating that it intends to lean towards live-service experiences. What that means for the future of Hogwarts Legacy is unclear but the shift to a “games as service” model for the Wizarding World will likely put off many dedicated fans.

Aside from Hogwarts Legacy, Portkey Games, alongside Unbroken Studios, is already working on a new Wizard World game in the form of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, a multiplayer adaptation of the fictional sport. Players will be able to choose their position as a Chaser, Seeker, Beater, or Keeper, and compete in a variety of game modes. A release date for Quidditch Champions has yet to be locked in but a public test has already been held, suggesting more news will follow in 2024.
