12 Reasons we do Eyes Closed Squats!! Alabama Running Back Justice Haynes #powerlifting

Alabama RB Justice Haynes Eyes Closed Squats! 12 Benefits.

Great session yesterday with Justice as he crushed 405 lb eyes closed 90 degree eccentric isometrics barbell back squat. It had been a few weeks since I’d seen Justice so we focused primarily on technique, alignment, stability, motor control, foot activation, & proprioception. In fact several exercises yesterday involved eyes closed drills.

Note: 90 Deg = 30 deg above parallel due to tibial inclination.

Eyes closed protocol is something I’ve been advocating for years & use consistently with all of my athletes. Here’s why.

12 Reasons to do Eyes Closed Training (more in my book MOVEMENT REDEFINED link bio).

1. Increased proprioceptive feedback from muscle spindles & intrafusal muscle fibers. This results in greater sense of feel & kinesthetic awareness.

2. Improved ability to attend to one’s pre-existing levels of proprioceptive feedback due to elimination of visual system.

3. Requires lifter to correct their posture & alignment to maintain balance.

4. Produces greater levels of intramuscular tension due to greater instability.

5. Forces lifter to slow movements down to maintain control.

6. Increases core stability & trunk stiffness to control one’s body.

7. Increases foot & ankle activation to stabilize & maintain balance.

8. Produces greater grip & forearm activation as lifter is required to grip weights more forcefully to control load which helps joint packing & joint stability.

9. Forces lifter to select lighter loads as going too heavy under eyes closed conditions makes it impossible.

10. Eliminates ability to cheat, shift, or use excessive momentum. This improves joint health & muscle growth.

11. Teaches athlete to use optimal range of motion of 90 deg as going too deep with eyes closed feels out of control.

12. Requires greater cognitive engagement & mental focus during lifting resulting in greater neuroplasticity & creation of new neural pathways.

People around the world reporting how 90 deg training healed & transformed their bodies while giving them more muscle growth, functionality, strength, & athleticism than any method. God gets all the glory!
