Since his debut 85 years ago, Batman has used a wide variety of crime-fighting gadgets, and now he has unleashed his silliest one yet–and strangely enough, it works. In a preview for Batman: The Dark Age #2, a young Bruce Wayne is being held unjustly in prison. Bruce is an easy target for the inmates, using his resourcefulness to create a deceptively silly weapon that does the trick.
DC Comics shared a first look at Batman: The Dark Age #2, written by Mark Russell and drawn by Mike Allred, with AIPT. Bruce Wayne is spending his 18th birthday in Blackgate Prison. He reveals he had Alfred bake him a birthday cake, complete with candles. He is then beset upon by three inmates. Bruce reveals the cake is actually a weapon. Alfred baked it with calcium hydroxide, which he used to blind one of the inmates. The cake’s candle is made of paraffin wax, which is a fire accelerant.
Bruce uses it to burn an inmate. Call it: “Bat-cake.”

In a world of people like Superman or Wonder Woman, Batman knows he is seriously outclassed. A mere mortal, Batman compensates for his power deficiencies by using a never-ending array of high-tech gadgets. Many of them are stored on his iconic utility belt, and many were financed through the various holdings of Wayne Enterprises. Among Batman’s best known toys include his grappling gun as well as a variety of weapons. Yet even without his weapons, Batman is resourceful. He can turn anything into a weapon, and his hand-to-hand combat skills are second to none.

In Batman: The Dark Age, Bruce Wayne was not with his parents the night they were murdered, leading to him going down a very different path. Without the drive witnessing the murder put him in, and the resources of Wayne Enterprises, Batman must find other ways to fight crime and save Gotham. Wayne Enterprises has come under Pariah’s control, and the board is actively seeking to kill Bruce, to prevent him from taking his rightful place as CEO. Yet even with these disadvantages, the Batman of The Dark Age is still as resourceful as any other variant.

And the “Bat-Cake” seen in this issue is the proof. Batman is continually sizing up potential threats, and he does that in the preview for The Dark Age #2. Bruce knew the types of men he would be up against. Batman had Alfred use ingredients in the cake that would slip past contraband detectors, but still be effective. Without any hesitation, Batman uses the cake to brutally counter his attackers. While the preview does not show what happens next, Batman has used the goofiest weapon of his career–and it was highly effective.
