Does Home Depot Price Match?

In the late 1970s, the eventual founders of Home Depot toyed with a concept for a new kind of store: A mega-hardware store that catered to the needs of DIY homeowners. Each store would be manned by highly trained staff that could walk customers through their dream projects while suggesting products and services. In just a few short years, the company went public and was on the road to becoming the successful business it still is today.

Home Depot offers a lot of great ways to save when shopping in person or online. One of the best things about shopping with them is how easy it is to return items. But how does a home improvement center stay competitive with all the competition from in-person and online shopping? How do they encourage customer loyalty? One big part of that is ensuring a consistent everyday low price for items and some great seasonal sales and promotions.

Home Depot Price Matching Policy

Home Depot offers what it calls its Low Price Guarantee, which is essentially its price-matching policy. While Home Depot’s Low Price Guarantee is not fully comprehensive, it exists to ensure that when shopping at a big-box home store, Home Depot will be there to provide the best or the same price. Using the Low Price Guarantee system is pretty easy and straightforward, so it’s worth a shot!

Competitors

Home Depot will price match its competitors, such as Lowe’s, Ace Hardware, Walmart, and mom-and-pop hardware stores, at the point of purchase. Unfortunately, it does not offer a comprehensive list on its website. To request a price match, bring proof of the lower price you found to your nearest Home Depot. For online shopping, call 1-800-430-3337. Competitors don’t include membership-based retail wholesalers.

Lowest Price Guarantee

If you bought something and find it fell in price at Home Depot, you can ask for a price adjustment within 30 days of your purchase if the price drops. However, Home Depot does NOT adjust prices based on lower prices found at competitors after you make the purchase.

In-Store Price Match

If you’re in a Home Depot store and find a better price at HomeDepot.com OR you’re shopping online and know that mulch is cheaper in-store, you can’t get a price match. Home Depot doesn’t offer store-to-store price matching. So, if your friend tells you marigolds are half the price at the Home Depot across town, you can’t go to the Home Depot closest to you and ask for the lower price, even with photo evidence.

Online Price Match

Price matching online at Homedepot.com must be made through Home Depot’s customer service by calling 1-800-446-3337 or 1-800-HOME-DEPOT. Have the ad or website ready to provide.

To qualify for any price match at Home Depot, these things must happen:

  • Home Depot only offers a price match for the same item: brand, size, and model.
  • The item you want to price match must be in stock and available to ship to your location for online purchases.
  • You must provide proof of the price (receipt) you paid and the lower price you find (website, photo or flyer). Bring your receipt and proof to customer service when you’re in-store to receive a credit back in the form of your original payment.
  • Only the person who made the purchase will qualify for a price match.

If you buy your items online but ship to your store and happen to find a lower price, you can bring in your proof for verification, and your price will be adjusted at the item pick up.

Home Depot Price Match Exclusions

This might not be an exhaustive list of exclusions, but it’s the current ones Home Depot has online:

  • Customized or special orders: Any time you can order something to your specifications, it’s considered a special order and would not qualify for any price match.
  • Super sales events: There is no price matching on seasonal, clearance, going-out-of-business, or discontinued sale items. This also means no price matching for Black Friday, Spring Black Friday, Holiday Promotions, or special bundle sales events.
  • Open-box or refurbished products: You can only price-match new items to other new items.
  • Special services: No price matching for any labor, professional or installations.
  • Mistakes: Home Depot will not match pricing errors from other merchants.
  • Credit card deals or finance promotions: If you find a great deal involving a store credit card or special financing, it will not qualify for a price match.

How To Get a Price Match at Home Depot

Follow these steps to qualify for a price match:

  1. Find or buy your in-stock item at Home Depot or homedepot.com. If you know of a lower price before purchase, tell the cashier. Receive your price match then and there.
  2. After purchase, keep all your receipts and records of sale.
  3. Check back to see if the item you bought at Home Depot went on sale at Home Depot.
  4. Bring proof of higher price to a Home Depot store to Customer Service, or if your purchase was at Home Depot, call Customer Services at 1-800-HOME-DEPOT.
  5. Receive price adjustment for the item.
