Xperia 1 VI and 10 VI camera islands’ leak suggests new larger modules

Tempered glass lens protectors for the upcoming Xperia 1 VI and 10 VI appeared on Japan’s Rakuten Market ahead of the Xperia launch event scheduled for May 17. The notable bit is that both protectors are physically larger than those of their predecessors and feature wider apertures which could translate to larger camera sensors.

The lens protector for the Xperia 1 VI is 1.5 x 5.2cm in size compared to the 1.3 x 4.9cm structure on the Xperia V while the one for the Xperia 10 VI is 1.6 x 3.3cm which is also physically larger than the camera island area on its predecessor. There is a chance that these larger camera islands are purely for aesthetics and that the sensors inside them remain unchanged.

A rumor from earlier this month claims that Xperia 1 VI will use the same camera sensors as its predecessor – a 24mm 48 MP main shooter (f/1.9 aperture and 1/1.35″ sensor), a 16mm 12 MP ultrawide (f/2.2 and 1/2.5″ sensor), and an 85-125mm 12 MP telephoto (1/3.5″ sensor and continuous zoom). Sony is expected to offer software improvements.

Recently leaked renders for the Xperia 1 VI showed an identical-looking design to the Xperia 1 V with a tall 6.5-inch screen with a new aspect ratio that forgoes the 21:9 rate seen on previous models. Sony is also rumored to drop the 4K resolution on its flagship phone. The device is expected to launch with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and up to 16GB RAM.
