ELKMONT, ALABAMA — A minor race held in an Alabama town with a population of just 500 is attracting the attention of the running world after an unofficial participant claimed seventh place.
The inaugural Elkmont Half-Marathon took place on Jan. 16 to help raise funds for cross-country runners at a local high school.
But the 165 finishers faced some unexpected competition when they were joined by a 2 1/2-year-old bloodhound named Ludivine, Canadian Running reported.
Owner April Hamlin told Canadian Running the unleashed dog found her way to the starting line after being allowed out to do her doggy business.
Named after a French character in the Russell Crowe movie “A Good Year,” Ludivine chased down the pack like a Frenchman going after blue cheese.
Aside from some unscheduled stops to investigate a dead rabbit and sniff around another dog, Ludivine stuck to the 13.1-mile course, other participants told Runner’s World. The dog finished in 1:32:56.
Race organisers thought Ludivine deserved a medal for her efforts and said they were delighted with the publicity generated by her run, Canadian Running reported.
