Alabama is among the states where drivers consume the most gas per capita, according to an analysis by an online insurance comparison shopping and research site.
QuoteWizard says Alabama is the 10th “Most Gas Guzzling State,” based on an analysis of the number of gallons used per driver and per person in each state.
To arrive at those figures, QuoteQizard analyzed Federal Highway Administration and U.S. Energy Information Administration data, looking at both the number of licensed drivers and the total population, between 2019 through 2022.
The total gallons of gas used in each state was then divided by the total number of licensed drivers and people in each state.
According to the analysis, Montana, Rhode Island and Wyoming use the most gas, while Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts use the least. The survey found that less populated but geographically larger states tend to use the most gasoline per capita.
According to QuoteWizard, the average Alabama driver used 303 gallons of gas between October 2021 and March 2022. Averaged out for the total population, that figure becomes 244 gallons. During that time, Alabamians used 1.2 billion gallons of gas.
Of the top 10 gas guzzler states, Alabama and Louisiana were the only ones that used just a little more than 1 billion gallons. But their totals were dwarfed by Texas, which used 7 billion gallons during those six months.
The average price of regular unleaded gasoline in Alabama today dropped another penny to $4.48 a gallon, according to AAA. That’s down from its all-time high of $4.63 two weeks ago, on June 14.
